Securing Industrial Control Systems: A Systematic Review of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) for Mitigating Attacks on Modbus/TCP and HTTP Protocols

Abstract: Many communication protocols used in Industrial Control Systems, such as Modbus/TCP and web-based services, were developed many years ago and were not originally designed with strong security features. As a result, Industrial Control Systems became vulnerable to cyberattacks.
This paper reviews existing studies that explore how Software-Defined Networking (SDN) can improve security in Industrial Control Systems. The review focuses on how researchers simulated attacks and designed defensive strategies designed for protocols like Modbus/TCP and HTTP. It also examine Software-Defined Networking-based security frameworks, compares performance results, and identifies research trends and gaps. The findings indicate that integrating Software-Defined Networking with ICS can enhance network security in the environment. SDN and ICS Systems are used together to enhance network security by improving monitoring and protection against attacks. However, several challenges remain, including delays caused by SDN mechanisms and compatibility issues with existing industrial systems. To address the issues raised, a few solutions have been researched on the protection of several protocols altogether, and many studies do not evaluate their approaches under real industrial conditions.
