Impact of Blade Icing on the Performance of the Kola Wind Power Plant: Modelling and Analysis

Abstract: The paper examines the impact of atmospheric icing on wind turbine blades on the energy production of the Kola Wind Power Plant, located in the cold and humid climatic conditions of the Murmansk region. An engineering-oriented numerical model of wind turbine blade icing is developed based on the Makkonen formulation, accounting for meteorological conditions characteristic of the region and the main mechanisms of ice accretion and ablation. The blade is discretized into radial segments, for which ice accumulation and removal processes, residual ice thickness, and the associated degradation of aerodynamic performance and rotor rotational speed are calculated. Based on model simulations, energy production losses for the Kola Wind Power Plant in 2023 are estimated. The results show that during the cold season, atmospheric icing can reduce monthly energy production by approximately 2–15%, depending on the month, while the integral annual losses amount to about 4–5% compared to an ice-free scenario.
