Stabilization of a Quadrotor Drone Before and After PID Control

Abstract: The ability of quadrotor drones to manoeuvre makes them very effective aerial vehicles; however, quadrotor inertial properties make them inherently unstable vehicles due to their nonlinear and underactuated dynamics. This paper investigates and compares quadrotor stabilization performance before and after a classical PID (proportional-integral-derivative) control implementation. Utilizing a 6-DOF dynamic model with position and attitude tracking, simulation testing of a quadrotor indicates substantial augmented trajectory tracking, orientation stabilization, and disturbance robustness after the implementation of a PID controller.
