Abstract: This study presents a technical analysis of three widely used hydro turbines—Francis, Kaplan, and Turgo turbines—focusing on their design principles, operating conditions, performance characteristics, and real-world applications. Each turbine type serves a specific role in hydropower generation, depending on site-specific parameters such as head, flow rate, and load variability. The article also discusses technical challenges such as cavitation, silt erosion, and vibration, along with recent innovations in CFD modeling, anti-wear materials, and predictive maintenance technologies. A comparative evaluation highlights the advantages, limitations, and future potential of each turbine type, supported by real case studies.
