Abstract: In this work, we introduce a new hybrid window to mitigate spectrum leakage as well as to enhance FIR
filter design thereby reducing the pass band ripples level. We have, therefore, truncated the infinite impulse
response (IIR) of a band pass digital filter by the two commonly used windows; Hamming, Hanning, and by the
proposed hybrid window in order to obtain a finite impulse response (FIR), and then compared the obtained
frequency responses. The results obtained with this hybrid window, show that the pass band spectrum leakage is
clearly more mitigated than those obtained with the other two windows. Furthermore, we have shown the
performance of this window in controlling the resolution when used as sliding window in the time-frequency
analysis. We believe that this hybrid window has a great potential not only to enhance the FIR filter design but to
mitigate the Welch’s power spectral density leakage as well.
