Strengthening Mathematical Skills through Computational Thinking with Educational Robotics Scenarios

Abstract: In modern educational settings, a prominent movement is the promotion of pedagogical practices that foster the development of new skills such as digital literacy and computational thinking. These practices also aim to cultivate positive social behaviors in students in the early stages of their education. This study intends to create and incorporate educational activities centered on computational thinking and educational robotics in early childhood education, captivating and developing mathematical competencies in students. The initial phase involved a comprehensive review of new skills in the digital age, such as literacy, and the impact of technological advancements, like educational robotics and programming, to facilitate new methods of learning and cognition. To achieve the intended goal, a study was designed using a quantitative methodology and a quasi-experimental design involving pre-test and post-test measurements, as well as a control group. The collected information underwent statistical analysis, revealing significant differences in results between students who were part of the educational sessions versus those who were not. Similarly, it was revealed that the proposed activities propelled the strengthening of mathematical competencies, social skills, and positive behaviors among the students. It was also observed that the participants showed a great interest in programming and the use of robotics as a highly impactful learning tool. The research findings provide a notable addition to the current scientific understanding of how mathematical competencies can be strengthened by leveraging computational thinking in educational environments that integrate robotics, where this progress can commence during the formative years (preschool and early primary) and subsequently stimulate the development of essential life competencies.
