Digitalization in the Environment of Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Farms: A Case Study in Slovakia

Abstract: Digitalization in agriculture is a growing trend that affects productivity, sustainability and competitiveness. Studies point to the benefits of digitalization in agriculture but often leave a gap in the perspective of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises on digital transformation. We obtained data from a questionnaire distributed to agricultural enterprises in Slovakia. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to identify significant differences in the responses of enterprises divided into micro, small and medium-sized according to the number of employees. The findings show that micro-sized enterprises have severe resource limitations and medium-sized enterprises are at the forefront of digital adoption. All sizes of farms acknowledge the importance of digitization, however medium-sized enterprises perceive legislative obstacles as a significant barrier. The study provides insight into enterprises' perceptions of digitalization, which is valuable for farmers, policymakers, and academics.
