Abstract: In search of energy-efficient solutions in all economic sectors, this article examines the opportunities that can be realized in railway transport, particularly in the Balkans. Solar applications in Europe's railway industry are studied. Good practices from Switzerland, which are developing solar panels for installation between railway lines, are explored. The advantages and disadvantages of the concept and technology involved are examined. The article focuses on these practices as an opportunity to generate renewable energy for the Balkan railway network, as it was well developed in the past and has always been of strategic transport importance for the connection between Europe and Asia. The possible energy income at the sites is calculated, and conclusions are made about the potential and future of solar panels in transforming the outdated railway infrastructure into a modern green energy source.
