Stand-alone Hybrid Solar-Wind Microgrid for Providing Clean and Reliable Energy to Disadvantaged Communities

Abstract: The need for a tailored energy solution for disadvantaged communities, such as mobile homes and home clusters, motivates the development of a stand-alone hybrid solar-wind microgrid. Such communities often have access to the grid, but the supply is not reliable, leading to frequent outages in adverse weather conditions. The microgrid is designed based on the needs of a mobile home community in California, chosen as a model. A prototype of the microgrid is implemented and tested. The test results show that the prototype operates properly and meets design expectations. In both day and nighttime situations, the solar PV panel can supply the loads and charge the battery. The wind turbine is capable of supply its loads when wind is available. The control system functions properly. The hybrid solar-wind microgrid and its prototype demonstrate the microgrid potential to provide reliable and sustainable energy for improving life quality of underserved communities.
