Incorporation of adequate ground improvement technique with the aim of upgrading the strength and stiffness of the weak soil is essential in such cases. Amongst various established methods adopted worldwide for improving soft ground, using perforated piles is a relatively emerging technique. Such piles not only transmit the structural load into the subsoil beneath in a manner similar to the conventional piles, but also assist in radial consolidation of soft soil due to perforated side walls. This paper presents a brief overview on the investigations carried out on this new technique. Also, a typical case study has been presented. As observed, the axial pile capacity progressively increased while settlement reduction took place, with accelerated radial consolidation.
<publication_date media_type="online"><month>1</month><day>10</day><year>2022</year></publication_date><publication_date media_type="print"><month>1</month><day>10</day><year>2022</year></publication_date><pages><first_page>21</first_page><last_page>28</last_page></pages><publisher_item><item_number item_number_type="article_number">4</item_number></publisher_item><ai:program xmlns:ai="http://www.crossref.org/AccessIndicators.xsd" name="AccessIndicators"><ai:free_to_read start_date="2022-01-10"/><ai:license_ref applies_to="am" start_date="2022-01-10">https://wseas.com/journals/mechanics/2022/a085111-454.pdf</ai:license_ref></ai:program><archive_locations><archive name="Portico"/></archive_locations><doi_data><doi>10.37394/232011.2022.17.4</doi><resource>https://wseas.com/journals/mechanics/2022/a085111-454.pdf</resource></doi_data><citation_list><citation key="ref0"><doi>10.7158/c11-700.2012.10.1</doi><unstructured_citation>Fatahi, B., Basack, S., Premananda, S. and Khabbaz, H., Settlement prediction and back analysis of Young’s modulus and dilation angle of stone columns, Australian Journal of Civil Engineering, vol. 10, no. 1, pp. 67-80, 2012, http://dx.doi.org/10.7158/C11-700.2012.10.1. </unstructured_citation></citation><citation key="ref1"><doi>10.37394/232011.2021.16.25</doi><unstructured_citation>Basack, S., Goswami, G. and Nimbalkar, S., Analytical and numerical solutions to selected research problems in geomechanics and geohydraulics, WSEAS Transactions on Applied and Theoretical Mechanics, vol. 16, pp. 222-231, 2021, DOI: 10.37394/232011.2021.16.25 </unstructured_citation></citation><citation key="ref2"><doi>10.1061/(asce)gm.1943-5622.0001148</doi><unstructured_citation>Basack, S., Siahaan, F., Indraratna, B. and Rujikiatkamjorn, C., Stone column–stabilized softsoil performance influenced by clogging and lateral deformation: laboratory and numerical evaluation, International Journal of Geomechanics, vol. 8, no. 6, 2018, https://doi.org/ 10.1061/(ASCE)GM.1943- 5622.0001148 </unstructured_citation></citation><citation key="ref3"><unstructured_citation>Basack, S. and Nimbalkar, S., Free strain analysis of the performance of vertical drains for soft soil improvement, Geomechanics and Engineering, vol. 13, no. 6, pp. 963-975, 2017, https://doi.org/10.12989/gae.2017.13.6.963 </unstructured_citation></citation><citation key="ref4"><doi>10.1016/j.conbuildmat.2021.123609</doi><unstructured_citation>Tao, G., Yuan, J., Chen, Q., Peng, W., Yu, R. and Basack,, S., Chemical stabilization of calcareous sand by polyurethane foam adhesive, Construction and Building Materials, vol. 295, no. 123609, 2020, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.conbuildmat.2021.123609 </unstructured_citation></citation><citation key="ref5"><doi>10.1061/(asce)gt.1943-5606.0000178</doi><unstructured_citation>Wang, G., Consolidation of soft soil foundations reinforced by stone columns under time dependent loading, Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, vol. 135, no. 12, pp. 1922-1931, 2009. </unstructured_citation></citation><citation key="ref6"><doi>10.1016/j.compgeo.2018.09.001</doi><unstructured_citation>Nguyen, H.
